U.S. Visitors to Tanzania
In March 2007, nine engineering students from Michigan State University and their professor, Craig Somerton, traveled to Masasi in southern Tanzania to work with artisans at Ndanda Mission on solar cookers. The students came armed with sound scientific theories on the behavior of light and heat, and met up with artisans experienced in constructing solar ovens. They worked together to test and improve the ovens. The artisans learned some theory, the students learned some practicalities of building without the plethora of power tools and computer enhancements that they enjoy at home. The MSU students ventured into a secondary school with experiments galore to teach why solar cooking works. What fun! Especially when experiments involved melting chocolate. Making progress together!!!!
